One aspect of Genesis 34 that I found interesting that is elaborated on in the essay “The Dinah Affair,” is how within Genesis 34 there is no reference to Dinah’s feelings. The major focus is on the feelings of the family especially the brothers. Their emotions are the guiding force for the decisions that are made due to how they need to regain their honor. I also found it interesting how the right of consent to sex and also marriage belongs to the father. In this context Dinah does not have power of consent. The language used to describe Dinah and Shechem is unsettling but without knowledge of Dinah’s feelings we do not know if Dinah is upset. If this encounter was forceful against her or against her family or both. We do know that her brothers are outraged. I don’t really know what I want to say about it but I find it interesting how a huge focus is drawn on Dinah by readers but the focus within the story is so heavily on everything but.
